The story takes place in the world known as heaven's fence, where a mysterious energy called the keywork binds and makes life possible for the triangular set of planets. The book focuses on the power struggle to control heaven's fencew when the newest member of the mages, the governence of the fence, Wilhelm Ryan, grows power hungry and beginas to take action for the overthrow known as the mage wars. With momentum on his side, Wilhelm looks to the skies and claims the keywork for himself and questions its meaning, while the heavens respond by opening up and forming the black rainbow. At this point Coheed, Cambria and Inferno enter the story who are reletive of Wilhemand ultimately overthrow the power hungry mage and relative in a battle that almost breaks apart the very existance of heaven's fence
